Beddington boxer Charlie Edwards steps into the ring this weekend as a professional boxer for the first time convinced it will be a winning start.

The 21-year-old takes on Craig Derbyshire at the O2 Arena on Saturday night, in what he describes as a dream come true.

Edwards signed pro forms with Matchroom Boxing in December after forging a name for himself in the amateur scene.

And whatever happens this weekend, there is already another fight lined up in March.

However, Edwards is focussed on the task in hand.

“I am feeling great, I have been tapering down and sharpening up and I know I am going to have too much for him because he is not at my level,” he said.

“Craig’s got a cage-fighter background, so he will open himself up and that will play into my hands.

“I am going to hurt him and make him pay.”

And it has been some build up to the bout, which will be on Sky Sports 1, as Edwards will be appearing on Sky’s Ringside programme, and he has already had a photoshoot with flyweight legend Charlie Magri.

Edwards said: “To meet Charlie was amazing, he’s done everything there is.

“Matchroom want me to follow in his footsteps, and he’s going to be a mentor to me, which is just fantastic.”

He added: “I’ve been all round the world with the amateur scene, but knowing my pro debut is but a few days away is like a dream come true.

“I am buzzing for it.”
