Stock rod driver Nicky D’Souza will be making the most of home advantage this evening at the Wimbledon Raceway.

Last winter, the south London racer had a hatful of wins around the raceway that elevated him through to the red grade of drivers.

After finding it much harder across the summer, D’Souza has fallen back to begin the winter season in the yellow grade.

He made an outstanding start back on his home track last time out, securing a rare hat-trick of wins.

With an obvious speed advantage, by half way in the first heat, D’Souza had pulled half a lap clear, leaving the rest of the field to tussle behind.

The safety car was called for after an accident on lap 13, which bunched together all the cars for the restart.

Once racing was resumed, D’Souza was off again, crossing the line10 metres ahead of world champion Stuart Smyth.

While D’Souza battled for second position in race two, the leader was allowed to get away. Luckily, a back marker stopped the progress of the lead car, allowing D’Souza to gradually reel him in.

With just five laps remaining, the challenger put pressure on the leader, bravely deciding to go the outside, and then sweeping past. D’Souza made things look easy as he came home several lengths clear.

The field of top drivers had found D’Souza hard to hold all night. Now in the final he was determined to land his hat-trick.

Battler: D'Souza, in the orange car, fends off a challenger en route to one of his three wins last time round

With several rivals jostling for position in a congested leading pack, D’Souza seized the initiative, quickly settling in behind the leader.

A clear road ahead for most of the race meant the winner would be decided by who had a finish in them.

As the final lap counted down, D’Souza leapt to the front and looked unstoppable again. On turn three he kicked for home, pulling further away all the time to secure a rare trio of wins, much to the delight of the home crowd.

D’Souza has another chance to impress in the Stock Rods this evening as part of another thrilling four formula night of oval racing at Plough Lane.

Also on the bill are the superstox, lightning rods and the full contact chaos of the bangers in the latest round of their Winter League.

Racing starts at 5.30pm, with turnstiles open at 4.30pm.
