In a sensational night of oval racing in the capital, Morden’s Jimmy Morris crossed the line at Spedeworth’s “Best in Britain” championship in dramatic style, to win the 1,300cc stock car title.

Heat one saw him start in his normal place on the grid at the back.

An aggressive charge through the field had him soon in contention for the lead.

Morris had to settle for second place, after being held up behind a back marker, allowing red grade driver Jamie Blackman to pull away.

Race two was equally frustrating for Morris after the race was halted on safety grounds with the driver out in front.

The re-start saw all the cars close up again behind the pace car, with Blackman on Morris’ bumper.

As the green flag dropped, Morris was caught by Blackman edging through on the inside.

He tried desperately to close the gap between them, but ultimately had to accept another runner up position.

Spinner: Morris, in the black car, puts his man out

The racing had been exciting all night, but nothing prepared the crowd for the final.

With a closed up grid, the action would now be much tighter, especially around the turns.

On the opening lap, the greasy surface facilitated many of the cars chaotically coming together.

Morris saw his opportunity and while his rivals sought to free themselves, he had already moved into second spot.

Having bided his time, on the final lap, it was now or never as he closed in on his prey.

Within striking distance, on turn three he accelerated for his lunge.

In doing so he managed to hit a safety tyre, lifting his car on to two wheels.

As it returned to the surface, he inadvertently pushed the leader out of contention.

Partially recovering his composure approaching the final turn, Morris lay across the oncoming path of world champion Adam O’Dell.

His momentum into the back of Morris’ car pushed him sideways down the track, but importantly not out of the way.

Winner: James Morris of Morden

Instead, with the force of O’Dell behind him still shoving, Morris took the chequered flag, albeit in an unusual position.

When it mattered, the sheer determination of Morris saw him victorious.

This Sunday at Plough Lane, Spedeworth host an exciting four formula fixture including 2l hot rods, ministox, rookie rods and superstox.

Racing starts at 5.30pm, with turnstiles open at 4.30pm.
