After six games without a goal, some were beginning to question Matt Tubbs’ confidence levels – but not the man himself.

The AFC Wimbledon striker answered any doubters with a brace in AFC Wimbledon’s 3-1 FA Cup replay win over York City at the CRRS on Tuesday night.

Boss Neal Ardley was not one of those pointing a finger at Tubbs, indeed, ahead of the FA Cup win Ardley reaffirmed his belief that the goals would come again – and he was right.

There was also a second Jack Smith goal of the season to level matters on the night, before Tubbs scored his 10th and 11th goals in all competitions.

Tubbs said: “I am a striker and all through my career I’ve had these mini-droughts so it was never playing on my mind.

“It was only six games without a goal, it could have been a lot worse, we could have been talking a dozen.

“But I’m confident in my ability and I’m confident in the players around me that they’ll create chances.”

Strike partner Adebayo Akinfenwa set up Tubbs for his first strike, before Dannie Bulman did the same for his second in the dying moments when the York keeper was left stranded after going up for a corner.

Tubbs, pictured scoring his second, said: “I’ve never scored a goal like that when the losing team’s keeper has gone up for a corner.

“I’ve seen it before on TV and I’ve always wanted to be the striker up the other end just waiting for the ball.

“Dannie’s played a brilliant pass, I’ve touched it on with my head and when I saw the defender coming across I knew if I could get something on the ball I’d have an open goal.

“Once I was past him, it felt like forever and there was a second when I thought I’d hit it too far ahead and I was not going to catch it – like I was on a travelator.”

He added: “But we deserved the win, we know we can play good football and with the fans behind us, like they were, we can give anyone a game.”
