Surbiton Hockey Club and Walton Athletics Club were the big winners at the Elmbridge Sports Personality of the Year Awards last week.

Walton’s throwing stars Sam and Sophie Mace collected the junior and youth sports personality prizes at Danes Hill Schooll on October 31 after stellar seasons in track and field.

The pair, who won the same awards 12 months ago, were both medalists at the English U15 and U17 Championships with Sam claiming an U15 boys discus bronze and Sophie – an English Schools discus silver medalist – claiming gold in the U17 girls discus.

Sophie was also crowned Sainsbury’s UK Schools discus champion and finished the year ranked number two in the country, while Sam was also South of England U15 shot champion.

Elmbridge Canoe Club’s Team GB kayak star Louisa Sawers, 2014 women’s K1 5,000m world champion, was the senior sports personality of the year.

Surbiton’s WHL Premier Division and Women’s Cup double triumph was honoured as they claimed the senior team of the year award, with head coach Brett Garrard winning the coach of the year gong.

Surbiton’s U12 girls were the junior team of the year, while the club as a whole collected the Mick Burgess Trophy for club of the year.

Walton Athletic Club’s U13/U15 youth development league winning squad were the youth team of the year.

Attention now turns to the Surrey Sports Awards held at Kempton Park Racecourse on December 2.
