Ben Harris already has four goals in three pre-season appearances for Hampton & Richmond Borough, but he knows he needs more to cement a Ryman Premier League starting slot.

The 23-year-old, right, bagged his side’s consolation effort in a 2-1 defeat to Premier League Swansea City’s development squad on Tuesday night.

The Windsor-based builder, who bagged two in a 5-2 win at Badshot Lea on Saturday, also scored in last week’s 1-1 draw with Championship club Brentford’s kids and he is out to complete the setagainst professional opposition when Crystal Palace visit the Beveree tomorrow.

Harris, who switched to the Beveree last Christmas, played second fiddle to hotshot Charlie Moone and Dave Tarpey last term and has competition up front in the form of ex-AFC Wimbledon hero Richard Butler.

And while former goalkeeper will play anywhere to get in managers Paul Barry and Darren Powell’s starting line-up, he knows only goals will get him there.

“I cam to Hampton to better myself. I didn’t want to be a big fish in a small pond and this is a definite step up,” he said.

“There is competition for places up front and with Charlie likely to start I’m fighting for on e spot – unless the gaffer goes with three up top.

“Playing against Brentford and Swansea is a bit of a step up to what I’m used to. They are professionals and are training everyday. You expect them to be good. It is their job.

“Hopefully, I can get one or two on Saturday. Completing the big three would be a nice set to have.

“I’ve got four in three games so hopefully I can continue that into the season.”

He added: “I used to play in goal not so long ago, so if it does not work out I suppose I’ve got that to fall back on.”

With Butler, Moone and Harris in the Hampton ranks fans will expect goals this term and Harris reckons that is only going to set the club up for a play-off challenge this term – if they can sort out their defensive problems at the back.

“I’ve set myself a target of between 20 and 30 goals this season and I would think Richard and Charlie are capable of that too,” he added.

“Everyone is still getting to know each other, but with the squad we have here I think we’ll go well.

“There were a lot of matches we should have won but let in sloppy goals, so if we can sort that out it will be a good season.”
