Consultation launched on major Sutton town centre redevelopment

A consultation has been launched on the biggest development in Sutton town centre for a generation.
A major new shopping complex, hotel and housing development is being proposed on a six acre site of degenerated land to the north end of Sutton High Street.
It is currently home to 1960s office blocks, which are part-let on short-term leases, an empty warehouse and gas holders.
Proposals being considered by the developer at the moment include a new supermarket and other shops and restaurants, residential accommodation, a new green public square, improved roads around the town centre and better pedestrian access.
Sutton Council has been working with the land owner, LXB, to make sure any redevelopment is suitable for Sutton and has prepared a draft planning brief.
Jayne McCoy, executive member for planning, economic development and housing at Sutton Council, said: "The next step is to see what local people think.
"This development will become a major part of our town centre, so it’s important we get input from as many residents and businesses as possible."
The consultation will run from May 29 until July 31.
An exhibition will be held at Sutton Central Library and the old Zurich building.
Draft plans will also be presented to residents at the Sutton local committee on May 29 and Sutton South, Cheam and Belmont on July 3.
Leaflets will also be delivered to residents and businesses in the area.
