To be honest I just want to live in as smart and stylish a place as I can. I can't afford to move from sutton, so want Sutton to get a bit smarter. I am sick and tired of being called a plant. I don't have loads of spare time to comment on things as i am too busy drinking coffee Joke by the way! I have commented on one other issue besides this one but this one is a really great chance to improve the place in a big way. I really don't think the developers whoever they are need a plant to get this built !!!"

A consultation has been launched on the biggest development in Sutton town centre for a generation.

A major new shopping complex, hotel and housing development is being proposed on a six acre site of degenerated land to the north end of Sutton High Street.

It is currently home to 1960s office blocks, which are part-let on short-term leases, an empty warehouse and gas holders.

Proposals being considered by the developer at the moment include a new supermarket and other shops and restaurants, residential accommodation, a new green public square, improved roads around the town centre and better pedestrian access.

Sutton Council has been working with the land owner, LXB, to make sure any redevelopment is suitable for Sutton and has prepared a draft planning brief.

Jayne McCoy, executive member for planning, economic development and housing at Sutton Council, said: "The next step is to see what local people think.

"This development will become a major part of our town centre, so it’s important we get input from as many residents and businesses as possible."

The consultation will run from May 29 until July 31.

An exhibition will be held at Sutton Central Library and the old Zurich building.
