Residents urged to have say over Surbiton street lights

A historical society has joined a Surbiton councillor in urging residents to make their voices heard over new street lights in Victoria Road.

The council is currently holding a consultation on which design will replace the existing street lights, with three alternatives shortlisted, none of which resemble the current lights.

Councillor Karen George and the Surbiton Historical Society believe the new lights should be in keeping with the style of the area.

Coun George has urged residents to go along to a public consultation at the YMCA in Victoria Road, Surbiton, on October 18, between 2pm to 4pm and 6pm to 8pm.

She said replacing the lights with a similar design would not cost much more money.

She said: “It has become apparent that many residents would prefer the lights to be replaced with the same design, as opposed to the three designs shortlisted for the consultation.”

A spokeswoman for the Surbiton and District Historical Society said: “Victoria Road has a very real Victorian feel to it and I would hate for the new lights to be replaced with something not in keeping with the area.”
