Kingston Council has vowed to go green after opting for renewable energy resources including wind and solar power.
The move will see a significant amount of the council's electricity use over the next three years from sustainable sources.
The council intends to reduce CO2 emissions by 24 per cent by 2015 as part of their low carbon management plan to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
Councillor Sharon Hartley said the green package, agreed for a number of council buildings, was just the start of a move towards a greener Kingston.
She said: “Where energy suppliers are competitive, Kingston will always support the greener option.”
The local authority hopes to include housing stock and a number of schools into the green package next year.
The new three-year deal with green energy provider SSE, (formerly Scottish and Southern Energy), will begin this autumn.
Kingston Council intends to demonstrate to local residents of their commitment to going green for the future.
