The woman who died after being hit by a train at Surbiton station is believed to be 43 years old and from Thames Ditton.

Police said they believed they had identified the woman who died on Tuesday evening but said she cannot be named until an inquest has been opened.

A spokesman said the death was being treated as non-suspicious though he did not say if she was believed to have committed suicide.

Paramedics were called to the station after reports of a person under a train at about 8.30 pm on Tuesday evening.

They treated a woman who was in cardiac arrest and suffering from a head and arm injury.

She was taken to St George’s Hospital as attempts were made to resuscitate her but was later pronounced dead, British Transport Police confirmed.

Commuters faced delays of up to 30 minutes until about 11pm as a result of the incident.
