Dare-devil mobility scooter whizzes along in three lanes of traffic in Kingston

If you can’t beat them, join them If you can’t beat them, join them

If you can’t beat them, join them.

That appears to be the attitude of this pensioner who drove his mobility scooter on the one way system along Fairfield North on Sunday.

The elderly driver carried on along the road for a couple of minutes, apparently oblivious to the toots and beeps from motorists, before turning on to Wheatfield Way, according to Louise Wood, who took the photo.

Mrs Wood, who works for John Lewis, said she was concerned for his safety.

She said: “It looked dangerous. I was a bit worried about him. He was waving his walking stick and flashing it in the air. It was really bizarre, and something you just don’t expect to see.

“Everybody was beeping him but he didn’t even seem to notice and just carried on along the road.

“I don’t know what happened to him after he turned off.”

The road is one of the busiest in Kingston. Last year there was a multiple car smash which hospitalised two people.

This guy is not a dare devil he is an IDIOT. Total lack of regards for his own safety, the saftey of other roads users and above all else the law. One can only hope that if he does get recognised he gets a visit from the police in the same way that I would if I drove my car on the pavement.

If there was adequate provision for him to get around i.e. a good cycle routes (segregated here) then he and indeed people on bikes wouldn't feel that they have no option but to use the road.

I fail to see how he's put other people's lives at risk, as given that this road environment means that almost exclusively motor vehicles would use it he is unlikely to hurt anyone else. That said, drivers if not paying attention could easily hurt or have killed this man.

jon_events: the lack of provision of facilities is no reason to ignore the laws of the land. If you can't see how this man can cause injury to anyone else with his actions then I sincerely hope that you are not a road user. Quick example: motorist has to take avoiding action when man on mobility scooter waves walking stick in the air. 1st motorist hits second vehicle and both plough into crowd of pedestrians waiting to cross at lights.
