Lighting the way: Schoolboy to take on Puck
A schoolboy will be playing a leading role in a musical production set to come to the Rose this month, writes Nazia Dewji.
Tom Goodwin, 12, who lives in Claygate, will be playing the role of Puck in The Dreaming.
The play is a modern spin on Shakespeare’s classic comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream and will be performed as part of the International Youth Arts Festival, which began last week.
Reed’s School pupil Tom said: “I love acting and singing. This is my second production so I was lucky to get the role, but I had to work hard for it. “I have lots of favourite parts from the play.
I quite like doing the scenes with the whole cast because it gets the audience into it and I really like singing my solo songs."
More than 600 people auditioned for a role in The Dreaming which has more than 40 cast members.
The production by the National Music Youth theatre has students from a number of different Kingston schools taking part, including Coombe Girl’s School and the Hollyfield School.
Prince Edward will be present on the opening night. The Dreaming, Rose Theatre, Kingston, July 17-22. Visit rosetheatrekingston.org.
