Bus strike causes disruption in Kingston Bus strike causes disruption in Kingston

Commuters face disruption today as bus workers strike in a dispute over an Olympic bonus.

According to union members all but “one or two” London United buses at Tolworth and Fulwell bus garages have been cancelled in Kingston, a claim not disputed by a spokesman for TfL.

They want the £500 bonus to be paid to all drivers but Mayor Boris Johnson said cash will be paid only to companies with extra passengers for the Games.

Union bosses have criticised the move and said the offer does not take into consideration people will visiting attractions in other parts of London.

Unite representative in South West London, Alan Duncan apologised to passengers but said drivers had to take action as they were being ignored.

He said: “No matter what Boris Johnson said bus drivers in this part of London are getting nothing.

“Nobody wanted this and we are really sorry for the people struggling to get to work but nobody is talking to us.

“He thinks that it will only be bus drivers near the games site that will face extra work but Kingston has the cycle race and there will be tourist coming to Hampton Court and Kew Gardens.

“Train drivers are getting the bonus but we bus drivers in South West London have just been forgotten about.” Mr Johnson said he was “saddened, disappointed and enormously frustrated” that a deal could not be done with unite members.

He said: “Despite brokering £8.3 million of funding, union leaders and the private bus companies have failed to reach agreement, and as a result it looks likely that Londoners will face unnecessary and needless disruption."

But Epsom Coaches confirmed that all of their services are running today, despite the 24 hour strike from union members.

A spokesman for the company said: “All services in Kingston are running as normal today.

"We are glad to help people go about their normally day despite the strike.”

Services running: 406- from Kingston to Epsom via Tolworth, 411- Kingston to West Molesey via Hampton Court, 418- from Kingston to Epsom via Tolworth and Chessington, X26- Croydon to Heathrow via Kingston and New Malden, K5 Ham to Morden via Kingston, Norbiton and New Malden.

The most disgraceful thing here is that the train drivers were allowed a bonus even though they will see very little disruption from the Olympics from their locked cabs.

The impact of the Olympics on bus and train services in ths area appears to be minimal and even if it is not, surely any extra hours worked can just be rewarded with overtime in the usual way?

I am 100% behind Boris refusing any bonuses. If they were allowed, we will be getting into a situation where a bonus is demanded for every little school fete and minor event that takes place in London.

I fully support the strike.

Busworkers have got below inflaton pay rises for years and years, their wages are awful compared to other transport workers, and their managements are guilty of the worst types of bullying.

Hopefully they'll carry on striking till they win, and then get the confidence to start fighting for better pay and conditions as well.

100% agree that bus drivers get the worst deal of all transport workers. It is a much harder job manually driving a large vehicle on congested London streets than just operating a start/stop lever on a train or tube and they actually have to deal with the public rather than being locked away in the cab.

I also agree that pay and conditions should be improved but I think it will be very hard to get the public to support Olympic bonuses.

My apologies, I misread an article the other day that I thought had said a bonus had been agreed.

Instead, it appears that the RMT are considering strike action because no bonuses will be offered.

It may well be fair that bonuses are offered if there is going to be substantial inconvenience during the games, but I find it hard to believe that the public will support them coming on top of a 4.75% payrise when almost every one else seems to be getting a 0% payrise and no bonus.

I am not sure why SWT and the bus companies cannot just pay overtime as normal. The employees would then be rewarded for the extra work they actually do and the issue would be nowhere near as contentious as a 'bonus'.

I understand that bonuses have been offered to tube drivers etc so i agree that bus drivers should also get bonus! Equality and all that!

But then what about the police, ambulance, firemen etc that will be working over their normal days work during the Olympics- there arent any bonuses being offered there? Where it really matters!

I am a pharmaceutical planner, my work load is going to double.
My role is pretty important... if hospitals and chemists want to be well stocked over the Olympic period I have to work, but im not getting a bonus! I dont think anyone should. I cant belive there are people out there that would cause this country hassle just to get a hand out. Just do your job and get on with it like every one else.
