Forensics officers are sealing up a flat today after a murder investigation began into the death of a 58-year-old woman.
Police officers are currently guarding a ground-floor flat at the corner of Springfield Road and Grove Lane, behind Kingston University.
Detectives believe they know the identity of the woman, who was found dead at about 2pm by police yesterday after a call from a concerned neighbour.
Denise Brewer, a neighbour of the woman, said: “I looked out of my window about 6.30pm and saw four police cars and one ambulance.
"Whatever happened it must have happened very quickly because I didn’t hear the police men when they came.
“I’m shocked to find out that someone has been killed. "Apart from the students it’s really quiet around here.
"I didn’t know the woman but it’s really sad.”
The flat has a sold sign from estate agents Lords outside.
Karal Smal, chairman of the Spring Grove Residents’ Association, said: “All I saw was the cordoned off house and an ambulance and police cars and forensic people. It is about 200 yards from where I live."
He said the house had been converted 10 or 12 years ago into flats or flatlets and turned into rental accommodation.
Mr Smal said: “It is just surprise. Something like that can happen anywhere.”
Kingston councillor Chrissie Hitchcock said: “When I came home from work it was all taped off and the forensics people there.”
Anyone with information should call police on 020 8721 4005 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
