  • "Jeremy, while you may find it perfectly acceptable for consultants to be paid whacking great sackfuls of cash (well done on the grand a day, by the way!) what's your opinion on peers of the realm being paid handsomely for their labours. Given the recent furore about MPs expenses I'm truly surprised that there isn't an absolute howl of outrage about people who don't even have the validity of a democratic mandate raking in tax free amounts day in day out. Let's not forget the majority of the House is made up from people who are born lucky or are the benefits of patronage and it's our money which is paying for it

This shows the allowances claimed by members of the House of Lords in September 2011. The House sat for just 8 days that month and you can see a whole column of daily expenses claimed £2,400 time after time after time. Granted some less. £2400 tax free and Ni free.

Imagine if that was MPs. There'd be hell to pay (and tax!)"
