Surbiton proves fruitful ground for farmers' markets

Trial farmers’ markets in Surbiton have been labelled a resounding success with the news Kingston Council has granted permission for them to return this year.

Three dates have been set so far this year. More markets will be held February 20, March 20 and April 17.

The number of stalls at the Maple Road market will increase to 25, including one stall each month run by a local charity or fundraising organisation.

Surplus generated is returned to the community to support local causes and, so far, the Stud Nursery for adults with learning disabilities is set to receive £530.

Funds from last year’s markets have also been allocated to pay for a lunch for elderly people in need.

Geoffrey Doyle, co-chairman of the organising committee, said: “The farmers’ market has been a tremendous success, beyond our expectations, and we’ve raised more than £1,000 for local charities in just three months. The market is already part of the community and must continue.

‘We’re working closely with the council to gain full approval for the whole year to avoid any disappointment to market goers.”
