The year Ann Stafford was born, 1909, Louis Bleriot flew across the English Channel for the first time, work started on the construction of the ill-fated Titanic, the Science Museum was founded, and the first rugby match was played at Twickenham.
It has been an eventful century since Ann put in her appearance, and on Sunday she settled back to enjoy her 100th birthday.
The Mayor of Reigate and Banstead, Councillor Richard Mantle, dropped in to the La Luz residential home in Tadworth to congratulate Mrs Stafford, and she was surrounded by flowers and cards.
But, best of all, her son Don and his family flew from America to join her for the big day and celebrate with a family party.
Mrs Stafford, who used to live in New Malden was keen on all the creative arts, wrote poetry, and enjoyed painting and sewing.
These days, however, she takes life more quietly.
