A plucky pigeon with human characteristics has visited a Kingston golf club every day without fail since his friend, a pro at the club, nursed him back to health back in May.

Walter was a bedraggled mess when he first arrived at the club and when we first ran an article in June, a few members at Coombe Wood Golf Club were unsure of what to make of him.

Since then the plump feathered character has won over members who often ask where he is, if he’s not helping in the workshop or chilling on the balcony of the clubhouse.

Phil Wright, the man who first befriended Walter, now has suspicions the young bird may be looking for love as he matures, although fellow golfer Tony Stenson was always convinced the bird had fallen in love with Mr Wright.

Walter, named after American actor Walter Pidgeon, is looking like a new bird these days.

Mr Wright said: “He’s looking quite different. He was looking quite scruffy a week ago but, over the last few days, he has developed a lovely plumage. He is becoming a man.”

He has also developed the adolescent tendency of enjoying lie-ins, and some days he does not drop in until noon.

He may have to lose a bit of weight if he is to find his true love though, as all the hearty meals of seeds and clubhouse nibbles are starting to show.

Mr Wright said: “I think I’m going to have to put him on a diet.”

Despite his weight gain, it is clear that his club loyalty holds strong - despite worries his Surrey Comet fame might change him.
