Police are investigating the daylight robbery of a Securicor van opposite Surbiton station which happened just over an hour ago, according to witnesses.
One direction of Victoria Road is closed off while detectives interview witnesses to the robbery, which people say happened at around 1.15pm.
Police have not yet confirmed whether the robbery was successful.
Milan Kolundzic, manager of the Surbiton Flyer, said two Securicor vans were parked outside the Natwest and Barclays banks.
He said: "One of the security guards who comes to collect the cash from Natwest was robbed."
He said customers had told him two black men had snatched a money box from the security guard and ran away.
Buses are being diverted from Victoria Road.
