Alcohol-related 999 ambulance calls have risen by a quarter in Croydon in the past year.

The sharp increase in the past 12 months has cancelled out the previous year's 14 per cent reduction in booze-associated emergency calls, according to the London Ambulance Service (LAS).

“Alcohol-related calls continue to be a real issue for us, especially on both Friday and Saturday nights, and particularly as we know alcohol is a factor in many more of the incidents we are attending, such as assaults and minor falls and injuries."

Russell Smith

New figures revealed there has been an eight per cent rise since the introduction of the new alcohol licensing laws two years ago.

A spokesman for the LAS said: "The increase in the last year alone has been so sharp it cancelled out the previous year's reduction.

"We are finding this has happened all over London. This time last year we were expecting to see a rise a year into the new drinking licensing laws, but instead they went down.

"This time last year we were saying the numbers had reduced, but it's a different story this year."

Over the same two-year period, the total number of ambulance calls in Croydon increased by just 4.5 per cent.

As a proportion of workload for London Ambulance crews, alcohol-related incidents in Croydon between November 24, 2006, and September 30, 2007, comprised 4.2 per cent of all incidents in the area, compared to four per cent in the same period between 2004 and 2005.

However, the London Ambulance Service believes the true figures are likely to be higher because the statistics were based on information received at the time of the 999 call, or where staff have specifically recorded alcohol as being the main reason for attending to a patient.

Across London alcohol-related 999 calls have risen by 12 per cent in the past two years, from 34,707 to 38,849.

The London borough with the highest increase was Kingston, which saw a 35 per cent rise - from 606 to 821.

Russell Smith, LAS deputy director of operations, said: "Alcohol-related calls continue to be a real issue for us, especially on both Friday and Saturday nights, and particularly as we know alcohol is a factor in many more of the incidents we are attending, such as assaults and minor falls and injuries.

"The reported increase in the last year or so has put us under greater pressure to ensure we respond quickly to those other patients with potentially life-threatening emergencies."

It's high time these persons who jam up the ambulances and A&E depts are levied with the full cost of their care. Why should everyone else be expected to fund care for those who are unable to control their alcohol or drug intake and who dominate common resources because of their social inabilities?

How right you are - I think they should pay. My limit is one glass of wine - we had Christmas lunch in an Indian restaurant today - turkey with an Indian feel. I'm waiting for a nurse from NHS Direct to ring me - they have been inundated with calls today - yet mine is genuine. I have had vertigo since early this morning because of an inner ear infection.

I agree with both of you and i'm in my late twentys and i still go out a lot, But i only drink what i know i can handle..I dont want to waste NHS time and money when they have enough troubles as it is..Not only that, it saves the embarrasment of being in A&E in the first place because i over done it!

Croygirl - spelling and grammar, please!! Nurses at Mayday are not awful - they work extremely hard for not much pay.
And "P" - if you don't like England, you can always move out! I drink one glass of wine on Friday, one on Saturday and one on Sunday. Why drink more? It's always so much more special if you keep it till the week-end - then buy some good quality Argentine or Chilean wine to have with one's steak, seabass or whatever, with stir fry vegetables and sweet potato. We wouldn't frequent pubs anyway, as the tattoo people use those.

Well done Cr0Alone,that's the spirit.

As for Croygirl, say what you like - so typical of a majority younger society: self-centred and unwilling to take on anything that interferes with having a good time.

The fact this Country is in decline is not a reason to turn to drink; it's a reason to turn to the polling booth to make the change.
Unfortunately the younger electorate, perhaps including you Croygirl, cannot be bothered to take a pause in having a good time and vote just in case they sober up and discover the benefit culture is not acceptable.

Oh yes Anne of course it is so easy for me just to move countries isnt it?! I am British and yet I want to leave this dump. What does that tell you? Why do you think more and more British people leave?!!
I dont see why I should pay so much tax every month to pay for all these asylum seekers. And yes Anne when I do save up a sufficient amount of money I will leave this rotten place. Until then I will choose to drink as much as I please!!!

As an expat for three years now, I can only recommend the quality of life over here. Once you have found a job and learnt the language a bit, you can really enjoy a much higher quality of life - public services are better, yet taxes are lower. The cost of living is less and people are friendlier, generally happier and more optimistic for the future. The weather and food is a hell of a lot better as well.

Anne for your information i have 10 GCSE's at C and above but cant be bothered to always write the way you like and to be honest you should call yourself Dot Cotton its actually quite fun to read all your comments on nearly every story on this site and you are of course always right! and Bob yes i am young (22)a civil servant i have a mortgage and i like to go and get **** every couple of weeks but i think i work hard enough and pay enough to be allowed to let my hair down but i think i found a new vocation being a matchmaker because i suggest that you and Anne Giles should see the light and hook-up as seems that you two are very well suited to each other and then you can spend your days together putting the world to rights!

ps Mayday hospital is a disgrace it is my local hospital and i would rather be in pain and travel further than go there!

Oh, dear - one seems a trifle angry, doesn't one?? I visit Mayday every six weeks for a blood test, followed by a visit to the consultant haematologist. I take a ticket in the Phlebotomy Dept., then go to the main reception area, which is very clean, sit in the espresso bar and have an espresso, then go for my blood test, then return to the main area for some lunch, then see my consultant. Thoroughly civilised, and the staff are all wonderful. Our former Police Sergeant had surgery there a few times after a boy knocked him down with his scooter and he was treated very well - I visited him, and he gave me his personal hospital telephone number - he had his own 'phone by his bed. Said he was looked after very well. Also - re letting your hair down, you dont have to get drunk to have fun. It's a lot more fun if you know what you are doing.

I am a firm believer that the increase in drink related problems is due to the spiralling prices of drinks. A night out costs so much now that most people can't afford to go out regularly, even if they wanted to. The result is that when they do go out it is often a case of getting completely hammered to make sure it is the best possible night. Of course this then flows over into trouble/injuries/hos
pital trips, etc.

ANNE GILES, SELSDON says...
3:56pm Fri 28 Dec 07

A night out needn't involve more than one alcoholic drink anyway. Pubs are horrible places - why not invite friends round to share a bottle of wine at home - with a bit of music and some food? I am quite happy with a meal out once a week with one glass of wine, or a couple of tickets for the cinema, or a gig, or the theatre. A meal at home watching TV with one's spouse is fun too.

Well I wasn't wrong then 'Croygirl,' was I?

'As for Croygirl, say what you like - so typical of a majority younger society: self-centred and unwilling to take on anything that interferes with having a good time.'

You reckon Mayday is poor? You're probably one of a mass of visitors who once in the hospital sit all over the beds, touch the patient with unwashed hands and stand bags on the bed.

What a glorious disaster you must be - 22 years old, a mortgage and a Civil Servant! You must think you know everything.

Pity you are so utterly wrong.

No one will probably see this reply, but nevermind!

"CroyGal" oops sorry, my young slang came out "CroyGirl"...Whoa whats up with you?
The first comment you even posted made me think "why on earth is she wasting her time with a comment like?" You had no reason to! They did'nt even remotely say anything out of order or wrong..If your so inclined to post comments like that, then go to the storys of the stabbings and write comments on there. You probably have already, but thats not the point..
I agree with what you say about Mayday. two family members of mine died with disrespect in that place, i'll never forgive them for that, and i worked in a hospital myself..

Also....Can people please stop slagging those with bad spelling..Im more intrested in the message or point, people are tring to get accross not the grammer. I say this because i was born deaf and started hearing from 10 years old, and ive come far to learn the knowledge i've gained..

i dont understand why all of you are complaining so heartedly with each other when that is not even an issue because at the end of the day certain facts everyone have said is valid and some really are unjustified and **** well rude like Bob Peel what i find funny is i am 18 i dont drink i recycle i vote for which ever party will not only benefit me but the country i have a son who needs proper guidance from me and society and i am living with my girl friend i love to peaces and loves me and we do voluntary work so who ever said the young demographic people in society arent as valued as older people your utterley wrong so get your facts correct and give the ones that do our bit little credit.
