A major road into Kingston town centre will close from 8pm for last-minute Ride London preparation and furious residents claim they were given only a few hours’ notice.

Portsmouth Road, between Uxbridge Road and Surbiton Road, will be closed until 6am for resurfacing work in time for Sunday’s Prudential Ride London race.

Anne Blanche, who lives in Portsmouth Road, claimed she only received a letter informing her of the closures this afternoon.

She said: “I’m furious. It was pushed through my letterbox after 2pm.

"No one knew anything about it.”

The letter, which is dated July 26, states residents can expect “some noise, smoke and dust” during the overnight works.

Parking restrictions will also be in force.

The road has been subject to months of building work as the first phase of Kingston's £33m mini-Holland project, also known as Go Cycle, is constructed.

Councillor Phil Doyle, who has responsibility for transport and highways, said: "We are undertaking resurfacing works on Portsmouth Road ahead of Ride London this weekend to ensure that this key section of the track is in tip top condition.

"Letters were issued to residents yesterday.

“The work will mean that Portsmouth Road will be closed overnight tonight with diversions in place, but will be back open from 6am on Thursday morning."

Cycling great and three-times Tour de France winner Chris Froome will whizz through the borough on Sunday as part of the Ride London series.

Race organisers confirmed that the British cyclist, who won his third Tour de France on July 23, will compete in the Classic race on Sunday as preparation for the upcoming Olympic Games in Rio.
