Former Kingston and Surbiton MP Sir Ed Davey has savaged the Conservative party and his Tory successor, James Berry, in an emotional post-Brexit referendum interview in which he accused them of "leaving smiles on the faces of Vladimir Putin and ISIS terrorists".

Sir Ed also told this website that Britain’s vote to leave the European Union would see “the bolstering, and encouraging, and rise, of the Right across Europe”.

He said Mr Berry shared a “colossal responsibility” for the outcome of the referendum, having urged Government to hold it, even though he voted Remain.

Sir Ed added: “It's a major blow to my children's future, and my country's future, and the future of my world.

“Mr Berry is responsible, just as Mr Cameron, just as Mr Gove. It was their party that put us in this mess. They should hang their heads in shame.

“People were conned. Mislead into a catastrophic decision. I think it’s a hugely sad day for the UK, and in fact Europe and the world.

“The Conservatives can no longer call themselves the party of the economy. You see what’s happened to the stock markets already. That’s going to have a real effect.

“Everyone in Kingston is now poorer, their pensions are worth less. It’s not going to turn around any time soon.

“I'm proud that Kingston voted, two-to-one, in favour of staying. I'm not surprised, Kingston has got some brilliant people.”

The former Energy Secretary said before the vote he thought Brexit would cause Scotland to seek a second referendum on independence, prompting the break-up of the United Kingdom, and re-stated that position this morning.

He said: “I still don’t want Scotland to leave, but you can hardly blame them.

“I love my country and I hope we can try to recover from this body blow. I hope we can somehow get through this.

“Of course we will survive. [But] our voice will be muted in the world. The world will be a worse place because Britain will be less influential.

“We are a force for good, and we will no longer be able to play our full role.”

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said this morning: “I intend to take all possible steps to secure our continuing place in the EU and in particular the single market.

“The Scottish people face being taken out of the EU against their will. I see that as democratically unacceptable.”

Sir Ed also suggested a second plebiscite should be held when the terms of Britain’s exit from the EU become clear.

He added: “People who voted Leave have voted for something that seems totally unclear. I don’t know what Brexit means, and nor do the Brexit campaign.

“People weren’t told what Brexit means. Over the next few months and years there will be a negotiation that will be protracted and painful.

“Presumably there will be a negotiated settlement. That should be put to the British people. We don’t know what we voted for.”

Mr Berry hit back this afternoon, calling Sir Ed's comments “disgraceful” and the Liberal Democrat party's attitude “patronising”.

He said: “It's highly insulting to the 17.4 million people who voted to leave.

“It's also the height of hypocrisy given that the Lib Dems demanded an EU referendum in 2008 and Edward Davey was thrown out of the House of Commons for angrily [debating] the subject.

“I won't apologies for campaigning to give the people the say on our EU membership.

“At the general election, more than 50 per cent of voters backed the three parties offering an EU referendum - the Conservatives, the Greens and UKIP.

“After the election, Labour did not oppose an EU referendum.

“The Lib Dems' adamant and patronising refusal to let the people decide on the EU, despite forcing an entirely self-serving alternative vote referendum in 2011, is part of the reason why they were wiped out in 2015.”
