Sixty-five members of staff at Kingston Hospital were physically assaulted at work last year.

None of the 65 assaults at the hospital in Galsworthy Road resulted in criminal sanctions, according to figures released by NHS Protect.

The figure is lower than neighbouring hospital St George in Tooting, which stands at 152, though the average per 1,000 members of staff is the same at 18.

There were 67,864 reported physical assaults against NHS staff in England from 2014 to 2015, a reduction of 819 from 68,683 in 2013 to 2014.

Richard Hampton, head of external engagement and services at NHS Protect, said: “While it is encouraging to see the total figure going in the right direction, there is no room for complacency.

“No NHS staff should be physically assaulted and we encourage staff who are victims of violence to report it.”

A Kingston Hospital spokeswoman said: “The Trust works hard to reduce the number of assaults on our staff, encouraging reporting and ensuring action is taken to both support staff involved and work towards avoiding repeat assaults through patient management.

“Staff receive conflict resolution training so they have the skills to minimise the chances of being the victims of violence.

“The Trust is committed to making sure our staff can work in an environment free from assaults."

A junior doctors' strike was scheduled to go ahead today with a picket line outside the hospital.
