A Kingston police officer is awaiting hospital tests after a handcuffed man spat into his mouth during a struggle in Tolworth Hospital.

PC Tom Henderson was called to the hospital, which provides services for South West London and St George's Mental Health Trust, on Tuesday to reports of a man “acting aggressively”.

When they arrived the man was kicking a door and trying to get into the building.

A police spokesman said the suspect “fought officers violently” as they attempted to arrest him.

He added: “During the struggle the suspect spat at PC Tom Henderson, which worryingly landed in his mouth.

"He continued assisting his colleague, PC Ian Gloster, in safely detaining the suspect.

"PC Henderson was then rushed to the virology department for various tests but despite the worry he is still back at work today showing extreme dedication to the residents of Kingston."

Borough commander Glenn Tunstall commended PC Henderson’s dedication.

He said: "Everyday that my officers go out on patrol they know that there is potential that they will have to put themselves in harms way to protect the communities of Kingston.

"Despite this they still rush from call to call with enthusiasm and dedication, which I commend them for.

"PC Henderson's dedication is typical of not only my officers in Kingston, but those all across London and nationally.

"The bravery and professionalism of our police service never ceases to impress and make me very proud that I am part of such a great organisation."
