Kingston police station opened its doors to the public yesterday with officers at hand to give people a taste of what it is like to walk the streets in uniform.

More than a 1,000 people arrived during the four-hour event opened by GP2 racing star Alexander Rossi.

As well as meeting the law enforcement team, visitors got to tour the custody suite, sit in a police vehicle and see the dogs and horses that work alongside Kingston officers.

Shoppers also got a glance of the police helicopter as it flew low down around the town centre.

Borough commander Glenn Tunstall said: "It was fantastic to see over 1,100 of our residents attending our Kingston police open day yesterday, which far exceeds the numbers that attended in the last two years.

“I would like to thank them all for their support and for making this a special day for all concerned.

“Whilst there are lots of people I would also like to thank for making this event happen, my special thanks has to go to GP2 racing star, Alexander Rossi, who not only gave up his time to open the event, but he also stayed on for a couple of hours to chat with our guests."
