A council meeting to decide on controversial plans for the old post office site in Kingston has been cancelled.

Developer St George has proposed a 19-storey tower block of flats for the town centre site in Ashdown Road, which has been strongly opposed by residents.

Police were called to assist during a bad-tempered council meeting to discuss the contentious plans earlier this month.

A decision on the application was the only item on the agenda of a Kingston Council development control committee meeting due to take place tomorrow evening (June 23).

But the developer has said it wants to “reconsider its position” and has asked for consideration of its planning application not to go ahead.

The meeting has therefore been called off.
