Teenagers won a u-turn from Achieving for Children (AfC) after the company proposed changes to a youth club that could have prevented youngsters from attending.

The social enterprise, jointly owned by Kingston and Richmond councils, suggested changing the meeting time of the Shout This Way club to 4pm, which teens said would have left them no time to get there after school.

Shout This Way, which has about 20 members aged between 13 and 19, meets on alternate Tuesdays at Barnsfield Youth Club in Kingston and Heatham House in Twickenham.

Member Harriet Axbey, 17, said: “We were all really upset when we were told. It’s not a very good idea. It’s OK for adults to be able to drive around but for children [it is not].”

But the Chessington Community College deputy head girl, who lives in New Malden, praised the u-turn and added: “It showed that we do have a voice, when we didn’t really think we did.”

The teens’ campaign included a blog post written by another club member, Ben Daniels, which was later deleted from the YU Online website, Miss Axbey said.

An AfC spokesman said: “As part of the ongoing review of all provision, consideration was given to looking at the time of day of the delivery, which was informally discussed with the user group.

“No decision was made to change the existing provision and the provision continues to run as is.”

He added the discussion with youth club users had been “tentative and part of an ongoing dialogue”.
