A man who suffered serious burns in New Malden on Friday morning has died in hospital.

Colin Edwards, 51, was found with burns in the early hours of the morning in New Malden outside Clear House, an empty building in Kingston Road.

From Friday: 'Homeless' man seriously burned in New Malden fire

He was transferred to the Broomsfield Hospital in Chelmsford, which has a world class burns unit and was undergoing operations.

He is understood to have died this morning.

The Metropolitan Police said today it had been told of his death, which was now being treated as a non-suspicious incident.

The Met had said on Sunday that although he had suffered serious burns, his condition was not believed to be life-threatening.

But a person close to the family said yesterday: "It is not very good. He has suffered life-threatening injuries.

"Everyone is supportive. He was very well known in the community. He is always out and about."

She confirmed Mr Edwards, originally from Surbiton, but who is believed to have been homeless at the time of his death, had suffered 50 percent burns and that his vital organs may have been affected.

She said: "We really have no idea what happened."

Another man was treated for smoke inhalation.
