Kingston’s future stage stars will be demonstrating their talents with an intense and darkly comic production at the Arthur Cotterell Theatre from February 20.

Immortal is an original real-time play that explores the moments after five English Air-Bombers crashland in enemy territory during the Second World War.

The men struggle with the painful decision to leave behind their injured comrade, or risk getting caught. The play is the first major project for Grean Tea Productions, a production company set up by five students from East Surrey College.

Nicole Burley set up Grean Tea and is directing the production which is playing for two nights.

She says: “Everyone in the cast is between 17 and 19 years old, including all of the backstage creatives, so we have been having a really great time together throwing ideas off one another.

“It has a really dark and gripping subject matter but there is humour in there too.

“Because we are all a similar age we are on the same level, which I think is important when you’re doing quite an intense play.”

Despite the young cast this is certainly no amateur production. Immortal was written by Ciaran McConville, who directed the Rose’s Christmas show The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe and co-produced by Finn Cole, of BBC Two’s Peaky Blinders.

Burley was part of the Rose Theatre’s youth group and setup Grean Tea Productions with four friends after the success of Shooting Truth, a play she directed in October 2013.

The success of the play staged at the Rose Theatre gave Burley the confidence and money to put on Immortal.

She says: “I’ve been a student of the Rose since I was 15 and Ciaran has been mentoring me since then. I suppose he saw some directing ability in me and said if I give you £400 would you like to put on a play? We used the money from the ticket sales of Shooting Truth to start Grean Tea and this production.”
