Plans for a multi-million pound redevelopment of New Malden town centre will go on show this weekend – to the surprise of many residents who have heard next to nothing about the scheme.

Mar City Homes will hold a two-day consultation on plans to transform the old shopping parade in Coombe Road, between the station and Alric Avenue, into 110 “modular” homes with a new restaurant and shopping area.

A public exhibition goes on display at the Malden Centre today, December 5, and tomorrow, December 6.

An artist’s impression of the plans released by the company shows a new high-rise building with rooftop gardens across the train bridge from the CI and Apex towers.

Lead architect Russell Pedley, who lives in the town, said: “The New Malden redevelopment is a great opportunity with it being so close to the station to create a stunning mixed use development.

“I’m looking forward to working with the community to regenerate this part of town, not only as an architect, but also as a resident.”

Mar City chief executive Tony Ryan said: “We are delighted to be going to consultation with the event held over this weekend. “We look forward to showcasing our plan for the site and we would like to hear feedback on the development.”

Plans for the redevelopment go on show today at the Malden Centre

Mar City builds modular homes which it claims can be constructed three times quicker than average homes.

The buildings are already part constructed and then jigsawed together when they reach the site.

But Frances Marsh, chairwoman of the New Malden Beverley Ward Residents’ Association, said residents had been given so little information it was hard to form an opinion.

She said: “I have only just heard about the plans this week. If what I think is going to happen does happen then I am appalled. We are already dealing with the Cocks Crescent redevelopment and I think we are in danger of New Malden becoming swamped with tower blocks.

“I don’t want that and I don’t think any other residents do either.”

Conservative Councillor Mary Clark added: “We know very little about the development. I know it is very important and I can only encourage people to get down there and give their opinion.”

The plans for the site are on show from Friday, December 5, from 4pm to 7.30pm, and Saturday, December 6, from noon to 6pm, at the Malden Centre, Blagdon Road. For more information visit coomberoad.co.uk.
