Witness the brilliance of A Christmas Carol like you have never seen it before when comedy troupe Bad Clowns bring their improvised version to Kingston.

For two nights, the Kingston-based company will be performing their unique take on the Dickens classic at the Arthur Cotterell Theatre.

Although staying true to the original Dickens story, the team will recreate the heartwarming winter tale through stand-up, improv and a bit of audience participation.

Bad Clowns, which takes its comedic influences from programmes such as Whose Line is it Anyway, was set up in 2013 by drama students John Bond, Christian Dart and Sam Walls.

“We wanted to pick a story that everyone will loosely know and then shake it up. Each performance will be different based on the audience that night,” says Bond.

The boys who are aged between 19 and 21 say their friendship is key to the group’s success.

”Rehearsals have so far been really fun, we have actually managed to rip two pairs of long johns and vests just from us running around and getting into the play”, says Walls.

It is not only rehearsals that the third-year boys are enjoying, after recently making a festive YouTube video, where they attempted to break the record for the most mince pies eaten in 45 seconds.

Anyone who saw Bad Clowns’ irreverent take on the Wizard of Oz at this summer’s International Youth Arts Festival might have some idea of what to expect – although don’t bet on it.

Even though this is the second time the group has performed A Christmas Carol, they have promised audiences this year’s version will be very different from the last.

Walls says: “It is a really fun and Christmassy and a totally different way to see the play.

”It is improvised and the humour by both us and the audience means that it is more of an adult nature.”
