Shoppers started the weekend with a high five courtesy of charity workers celebrating World Mental Health Day today.

The event was marked in Kingston town centre with an information stall and a mass high five at 11.05am, organised by Mind in Kingston and Kingston Council.

Kingston's deputy mayor Cathy Roberts and Dr Jonathan Hildebrand, Kingston's director of public health, were among the high-fiving participants.

It launched the start of a week-long campaign raising awareness for mental health.

Simon Montague Taylor from Mind in Kingston: "The high five took place at 11.05am on the dot with all of us finding a partner to high five with and wish them a happy world mental health day.

"The deputy mayor took this up enthusiastically and was very involved for the time she could be with us.

"It was a good day well spent as a visible and accessible presence campaigning for the promotion of positive mental wellbeing and challenging discrimination against those with mental health issues."

Councillor Julie Pickering, cabinet member for health and social care, said: “One in four of us will experience a mental health problem in our lives so it is important that support and treatment is there for people who need it, just as we expect for our physical health and wellbeing."
