A couple of pranksters brought an air of sophistication to a fast food restaurant - by enjoying a candlelit dinner at McDonald's in Kingston.

Cameron Ford and Adam Welland wore black ties and used their own cutlery to tuck into their burgers at the Eden Street restaurant on Friday - completing the cosy scene with a tablecloth, fake tea lights, and wine glasses for their milkshakes.

The jokers even fashioned a makeshift centrepiece from straws.

The stunt has brought minor celebrity to the group, with friend William Peachey tweeting a picture of the pair mid-meal.

The image has since been retweeted more than 14,000 times, with the story being picked up by several national newspapers.

But it seems not everyone was amused.

According to Mr Peachey, the group were told by staff: "leave or your [sic] banned, we didn't leave :(".

Mr Cameron said staff had a problem with the customers using their own metallic cutlery, tweeting: "they're [sic] weren't very knife..."

A McDonald's spokeswoman said: “We are aware of the two customers who dined at our Kingston restaurant on Saturday night and are pleased that we were able to offer them an affordable treat.

“We are happy to provide plastic cutlery to those customers who request it.

"We ask that any items brought in by customers, such as cups or plates, are used responsibly and taken away with them after use.”
