A new free school in north Kingston will not be opening next September as had originally been anticipated.

The Kingston Educational Trust (KET),  applied to the parliamentary under secretary of state for schools to defer opening of the building until September 2015.

It had won won a bid in May to create a six form entry secondary school on the site of the North Kingston Centre in Richmond Road.

KET, a partnership between Kingston Council, Kingston College and Kingston University, said the decision was due to “a combination of practical and other factors”.

The extension would also give more time to relocate adult education and archive services currently located at the North Kingston Centre, the Trust said.

Graham Willett, who led KET’s proposal, said: “We have always aimed to open the school in 2015.

"This deferral means that the school can open without adversely affecting the recruitment of children to other secondary schools within the borough.

"Moreover, the deferral enables us to have a longer lead-in time so we can implement our plans in a more measured way."
