One of the people hit when a car ploughed into pedestrians in Kingston town centre was a Syrian refugee who had just fled violence, snipers and repression in Damascus.

His sister in law, who asked only to be identified as Dima, 25, said Yassar, was being shown round Kingston by her husband Ammar, 26, after landing in Nottingham days before on a flight from Beirut.

She said: “There was violence, bombs and shelling 24/7 and snipers. It is a war.

“He never got injured but managed to get injured in Kingston.

"They were going to have some Shawarma at Lebanese Valley. He was standing across the street to Cappadocia.

“The BMW came against the traffic and it hit the cyclist.

"My husband and Yassar were walking together. When they saw the car aiming for them my husband jumped and managed to step away but Yassar couldn’t.

"The car hit him from the side and went on and hit a few other people afterwards.

“He hit his head and the car hit him in both legs and his back.”

A police officer directs an accident investigator to the point where the car struck the wall.

Yassar was taken to hospital but is back home in Teddington with injuries to his legs but no fractures, she said.

She said: “The whole experience was very traumatising. My husband finally got to see his brother and now he is feeling guilty because he brought him to begin with.”

Of the driver she said: “I’m trying to find a nice way to put it. They survived the war and a driver run them over.

"We are all so angry and frustrated."
