BROMLEY suffered a fifth consecutive league defeat at Weston-super-Mare on Saturday when they went down 3-0.

The Somerset club outplayed the Lillywhites for long periods and but for a sparkling display from keeper George Howard, who was standing in for the suspended Joe Welch, the measure of the defeat would have been much greater.

Bromley got off to the worst possible start in the second minute.

Jack Holland attempted to clear his lines with an overhead kick but the ball went straight into the air and was collected by Howard.

The assistant referee flagged furiously to award a free-kick for a back pass.

From the short free-kick, Ashley Kington took two paces to thread the ball home with the help of a deflection to put Weston a goal ahead.

Bromley reacted well with their best passage of play in the whole match when Elliott Buchanan picked out Ishmael Welsh, whose low shot was just wide.

Buchanan put Louie Theophanous in on goal but the striker’s effort was blocked by a defender, which rebounded to Welsh, who was denied by Weston’s keeper Lewis Carey.

On the quarter hour, Buchanan’s fierce low volley just failed to find the target with Carey struggling. But this was as good as it would get for the visitors, as the home side started to knock the ball around with ease.

Ross Stearn shot wide of an open goal and Jamie Price’s goal-bound attempt was blocked by a team-mate before Price’s volley was brilliantly tipped over by Howard.

The second goal duly arrived on 38 minutes when Stearn was all alone at the far post to hammer home a cross from the right flank, as the home side ended the first half well on top.

Manager Mark Goldberg made two changes at half-time but it made little difference, as Weston completely dominated proceedings with shots reigning in on Howard’s goal from all angles.

The keeper saved well from Kington and Price, but was unlucky when Dayle Grubb’s shot along the byline looped off a defender and over Howard for the home side’s third goal in the 58th minute.

Holland cleared off the line from Stearn on the hour and Howard tipped over from the same player a few moments later.

From the resultant corner, the keeper did well to palm away Chas Hemming’s downward header before tipping away another firm shot from Kington.

As the onslaught continued, Price found the side netting with a rasping shot and Kington was just over with a volley.

On 90 minutes, Theophanous put substitute Sam Spencer in on goal and with only Carey to beat, the academy player froze in front of goal and tamely let the ball run through to the keeper.

There was still time for the home side to hit the post and force a series of corners which came to nothing in time added on as Bromley dropped nearer to the relegation zone.
