A 20-year-old man who fatally stabbed a dad-to-be at a Kingston nightclub has been told he will spend at least four years in jail today.

Shaun Greenidge from Hilary Avenue, Mitcham, was given an indeterminate sentence and told he would spend at least four years in jail, minus the 387 days he spent on remand, before he could apply for parole.

This is yet another example of the dreadful consequences that flow from carrying a knife.

Judge Brian Barker

Greenidge, who has a previous conviction dating back to August 2005 for carrying a knife at Mitcham Fair, pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Mikey Brown in April at the Old Bailey.

Mr Brown, from New Addington, was fatally stabbed with an 8cm blade at The Works nightclub, St James Road, on June 23 last year.

He was rushed to Kingston Hospital but died at 3am on June 23.

A postmortem examination showed he had been stabbed through the heart.

The court heard how Greenidge had attacked Mr Brown after his girlfriend had said Mikey had been rude to her at the bar.

Sally Howes QC, prosecuting, said witnesses described seeing Greenidge on top of Mr Brown on the floor and both were "rolling around and swinging at each other" before bouncers responded to a "code red" alert by bar staff and intervened.

Both were ejected from the club.

After being stabbed the court heard Mr Brown asked the bouncer if he could retrieve his shoe which had come off in the fight before falling over outside the club.

The court was told the bouncers did not realise he had been stabbed and thought he was drunk.

A customer outside the club then came to Mr Brown's aid and emergency services were called.

Greenidge fled the country to Cyprus immediately after the stabbing and was arrested at Gatwick airport on June 25, having been persuaded to return by his parents, who went to collect him from the island.

Mikey's girlfriend Marcie Netting, from Basildon, Essex, gave birth to his son Romarni Mikey Brown 16 days after he died.

In a victim impact statement read out to the court, Mikey's partner, 20-year-old Ms Netting described losing the love of her life.

"He was, and always will be, my one true love, my soul mate and I miss him so very much.

"I live a life that is empty. I can't move on. I constantly miss Mikey .The one person I need I can't see or hear again."

In July, his family and friends held a celebration of his life in the Henry Prince estate hall in Wandsworth, which was attended by more than 200 people.

It also emerged that Mikey was serving a suspended sentence for stealing cars and driving dangerously when he was stabbed.

Jailing Greenidge Brian Barber, the Common Sergeant of London, Judge Brian Barker, said: "This is yet another example of the dreadful consequences that flow from carrying a knife in a public place."

He added: "Mikey Brown would not have died if you had not gone out that night with a knife. This resulted in a totally unnecessary death."

Four years? Is that it? Was it a reduced sentence because of the dead lad's past? What a travesty.

My thoughts are for Mickey's family and friends. The young people of today should take note of this story because if they take an offensive weapon out to party it can easily be used on you. Terrible story.

Oh my goodness! 4 YEARS!!!
For killing another human?
No wonder those involved in knife crime have no fear of any consequences.
Shame on the judge and the whole judiciary.
Time needs to be called on this sort of outrage and judges in this country need to be elected, as in the U.S.

So this guy stabbed a young man to death and fleed the country, only to recieve four years (minus 387 days).. absolutely awful, people go down longer for fraud (cos it costs the government)! My best thoughts for the family, and the poor lil boy who will never see his dad.
What happened to life for murder, im not saying i totally agree with the notion prison, but until there is a better solution you murder someone - you serve life (25years) in prison, simple!!

"was given an indeterminate sentence and told he would spend at least four years in jail"

I do hope this isn't the sentence, if it is that's absolutely disgusting despite what Mikey may have done previous to his death.

Murder is murder. Harry is so right when he says: "No wonder those involved in knife crime have no fear of any consequences."

No wonder indeed

I wonder what the Home Secretary would say about the sentence?

Oh, wait. She'd probabaly ask for it to be suspended so that the guy can visit stabbing victims...

It's high time the judiciary started handing out proper punishment! In fact, it's well overdue!!

A man takes the life of another and all he gets is a slap on the wrist. Is human life now that cheap? 4 years! This sends out a message to all murderers and would be murderers out there. A message of hope.

Things like this make me think leavong the UK was the best choice I've ever made. It's an absolute disgrace. I feel upset for the family but happy that my taxes no longer contribute to these idiotic decisions.

Just some food for thought - what if mikey was from an aflluent background? Would the sentence still have been 4 years? What if he had stabbed the guy and fled the country? I somehow doubt mikey would have got 4 years. Read between the lines...

They want to do something to deter knife crime, so they go giving people pathetic sentences for taking someones life? This is why people carry knives and kill people, because they laugh in the face of the law. I wonder if Mikey was the perpetrator, whether the sentence would have been the same, doubt it. Same way the girl who killed Sian Simpson walked away a free girl.
These people who carry knives intend to use them and just carrying a knife should carry a 4 year sentence, and murder, well that should be life imprisonment! Our so-called justice system is a farce, we need to be more like the USA when it comes to crime!!

4 years? It almost makes it worthwhile to get rid of someone you really really don't like, if that's the deal. What sort of message is that ?

I just cant understand the justice in that sentence 4 years. This country makes me mad, there needs to be something done. They are trying to so call put a stop on this knife crime but to give somone 4 years for killing another man is just a joke. And the fact that boy had already been caught before carrying a knife he will prob do it again and again, i mean whast 4 years........I hate this country.

While I understand the shock at the likely 4 year sentence, I wonder what the real circumstances of this incident were as opposed to what has been reported in the papers? I think it’s particular telling that Mr Greenidge was convicted of manslaughter not murder. I wonder what Mikey Brown’s contribution to this incident was? For example, was he the original aggressor and did he perhaps threaten to stab Mr Greenidge? I’m not saying that this was the case, but if that or something similar did happen then that would certainly explain the outcome of this trial – and make the sentence a somewhat easier to understand.
