Croydon will hear songs to the Queen
1:50pm Thursday 23rd August 2012 in Theatre By Nick Hitchens
Duke Ellington meets the Queen
Echoes of Ellington Orchestra perform a montage of music by Duke Ellington for the first time as a tribute to the Queen.
Swing band Echoes of Ellington, will be creating history as they perform a compilation of tracks called The Queen’s Suite, recorded but never performed by Ellington.
The Duke compiled it for the Queen when he met her during her early reign. While the concert will be the premiere of this new material, other well-known songs will also be performed.
These include It Don’t Mean a Thing (if it ain’t got that Swing) and Crescendo in Blue.
The band, led by Pete Long, have received many positive reviews for their talent in recreating Ellington’s works.
Malcolm Laycock from BBC Radio 2 said: “When I heard the Echoes of Ellington CD I thought I was listening to the actual Duke Ellington Orchestra.”
Echoes of Ellington; Fairfield Halls; Park Lane, Croydon; September 21; 8pm. Tickets cost £20. Call 020 8688 9291 for more.
