Award-winning Downton Abbey and Cranford actress Emma Lowndes will lead the cast of a new tour of Peter Whelan’s play The Herbal Bed.

Coming to Kingston’s Rose Theatre from April 26 to May 7, it is the first major revival of the emotional thriller which is set in the summer of 1613 and is based on the real events surrounding the public trial of Shakespeare’s daughter on charges of adultery.

It was first performed by the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1966 before transferring to the West End and Broadway and picking up a slew of awards along the way.

James Dacre, the Artistic Director of Royal and Derngate in Northampton and previously artistic associate at the New Vic Theatre and associate director at Battersea’s Theatre503, will direct.

The cast includes two-time Olivier Nominee Charlotte Wakefield, Philip Correia, Patrick Driver Jonathan Guy Lewis, Michael Mears and Matt Whitchurch.
