An award-winning Richmond amateur dramatics group promises to transport audiences to Terry Pratchett’s fantasy Discworld with their new production.

The Q2 players bring Men at Arms to St Luke’s in The Avenue, Kew, telling the tale of the city of Ankh-Morpork.

The book, which has been specially adapted for the stage, sees a city suffering from social change and an assassin from a down-and-out noble family trying to restore the monarchy to avenge his family’s demise.

Cat Lamin who plays Angua, a werewolf member of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch police force, is excited at the company’s opportunity to explore the fantasy world.

She says: “A lot of the cast are fans of Terry Pratchett.

“Men at Arms was 20 years old last year and despite suffering from Alzheimer’s he is still writing the Discworld books.

“For his fans it is a realisation of the books they have been reading for a number of years but if you stepped in as an outsider you would get what is going on. The script is not taken strictly as fantasy, it has been written more as a comedy.”

The big challenge facing the production was recreating the book’s graphic and detailed settings in an intimate venue. Lamin says: “What we have done is use a lot of costumes and physical movements to make it look as lifelike as possible.”
