Ben's Canteen, in St John's Hill, Battersea, has fast gained a reputation for bringing delicious food to South London.

The restaurant was opened by Ben Walton in 2011 and prides itself on its breakfasts, brunches and burgers.

My guest and I are greeted by an attentive waitress who shows us to a table located at the back of the canteen. There is a cosy-feel to the restaurant, which is reflected in the surroundings.

There are white wooden floors, clean walls and just the right amount of lighting.

The waiting staff are dressed in t-shirts and jeans, while it seems as if nobody would bat an eyelid if you were dressed up to the nines or turned up in jogging bottoms.

The waitress explains to us we've picked the right night to visit as there is a 2-4-1 cocktail offer on Tuesday's.

All of the cocktails are made with the finest Sipsmith Gin and Vodka, with some more unusual tipples on offer.

I select a sloe gin negroni, which is made up of Sipsmith Gin, Sloe Gin and Aperol, while my guest is served a spiced apple mojito in a jam-jar style tankard.

The menu also features comfort-style food and is not for anybody trying to avoid the carbs.

An array of burgers, chips and brownies are available, reflecting London's current obsession with all things New York.

At Ben's Canteen your pounds will get you a mini-scotch egg, a famous BC Burger and a glass of festival punch.

We also order a bowl of sweet potato chips (£3.50) to share between us, served in thick wedges with their skins left on.

The scotch egg was like nothing I ever tasted before from the likes of Tesco and Asda. The shell was crisp while the yolk melted out from the middle. My guest and I pondered how this feat was achieved for most of the meal.

The burger, a beef patty topped with a slice of home brined beef, will delight carnivores. The double beef was cooked to perfection, although it was far too large to tackle eating by hand and required a knife and fork. It was topped with lettuce, tomato, homemade sauce and cheese, making it unique to Ben's.

We are too stuffed to consider pudding, but we decide to take advantage of the cocktail offer. I opt for a vanilla and chilli caprioska, a mixture of Sipsmith Vodka, vanilla, lime and chilli, with a real chilli served inside giving it a kick.

My guest sips an Aperol spritz which is aperol, white wine and soda - a perfect appetiser.

Ben's Canteen is currently running an offer to tie in with the Fabulous Feast festival running until May 19 in St John's Hill. Throughout the week all of the restaurants in the hill are offering a special festival £15 menu.
