Shakespeare’s Elizabethan romp The Taming of the Shrew is in for a reality TV-style show makeover in a new production, writes Sara Bellini.

Surbiton director Tanju Duncan has put the comedy into a contemporary setting to give it a new perspective.

Duncan said: “The contemporary setting will take out any perceived political correctness about the classics, bringing it back to just being human – while being truthful and honourable to the original text.

“We aim to amplify Shakespeare’s language through movement, mime and music, bringing an exciting slant on this well-known classic.”

Duncan’s Moonlight theatre company is gaining a reputation for taking a fresh approach to ancient and modern classics.

After performing at the Cornerhouse Theatre, the play will go on to the Rose Theatre as part of Kingston’s International Youth Arts Festival.
