REVIEW: Sister Act - The Musical

REVIEW: Sister Act - The Musical REVIEW: Sister Act - The Musical

As a fan of the original film I couldn’t wait to see Sister Act the musical which opened at the New Wimbledon Theatre last week - and I wasn't disappointed.

Produced by Whoopi Goldberg, who starred in the hit 90s film, Sister Act has already enjoyed a successful run at the West End and is currently a hit on Broadway.

Packed with all singing, all dancing nuns and dozens of funk, soul and disco hits, the show is massively entertaining from start to finish.

Cynthia Erivo takes on the role of Deloris Van Cartier, originally played by Goldberg, and is every inch the 70s soul sister with thigh high boots, bouffant hair and sequins.

But after witnessing a murder, she is forced to go into hiding in the one place anyone would expect to find her - a convent.

Disguised as a nun, Deloris turns the convents off key choir into a soul singing supergroup turning around the church’s fortunes and landing an audience with the Pope - much to the dismay of Mother Superior, played by former Coronation Street actress Denise Black.

Belting out hit after hit, Cynthia Erivo gives a fantastic performance as Deloris with excellent supporting performances from the entire cast.

Sister Mary Roberts, played by Julie Atherton, and Sister Mary Patrick, played by Laurie Scarth, deserve a special mention for their excellent comedic performances.

Bad guy Curtis Jackson, played by Cavin Cornwall, and his side kicks, played by Gavin Alex, Tyrone Huntley and Daniel Stockton, were also on top form delivering hilarious dance routines and comic one liners.

I found Sister Act hugely entertaining and uplifting and can confidently recommend it to anyone looking for some light hearted entertainment.

What better way to spend an evening than with a group of sequined, singing sisters?

Sister Act will run at the New Wimbledon Theatre until Saturday, June 16.
