Sondheim musical comes to Carshalton
Talented performers will give Carshalton a glimpse of 1970’s New York this month, writes Sophia Sleigh.
A 35th birthday party arrives with a twist as the Mayhem Musical Theatre Company brings their version of Broadway musical, Company, to the Charles Cryer Studio Theatre.
The show tells the story of five married, about to be married and once married couples and their mutual friend Robert.
Robert, the birthday boy, seems to have everything - good looks, charm and a great sense of humour. However he is still single.
Through Robert’s eyes we witness the wonders and pitfalls of the relationships of the couples as well as his three on-and-off girlfriends.
Producer, Sophie Barthel is really proud of the team and says: "It’s a bit of a mix - it’s a Sondheim musical but it’s a mix of really great comedy and at times it’s sad.
"Robert is the main one- it’s a cast of 15 and they are all lead roles.
"It’s quite a challenging show - it’s great fun to get it together in six weeks.
"In a way - because we have this intense rehearsal period it’s better as you get to know the show really well.
The play is set in New York but the show’s director is from the States and Barthel says: "He was the best accent coach we could have."
"The combination of hilarious comedy and gut-wrenching tragedy that catapulted the show to win seven Tony Awards in 1970 couldn’t be more relevant in our lives today.
"It’s an honour to have the opportunity to bring it to Carshalton together with an incredibly talented team and cast."
Barthel says their 1970’s costumes came from vintage shops, car boot sales and the mums of cast members.
The musical comedy was created by famous composer and lyricist, Stephen Sondheim, and is based on the book by George Furth.
Company is filled with some of Sondheim’s most memorable and well loved numbers such as Being Alive, Ladies Who Lunch and Side by Side.
Barthel recommended that the show was more suited to adults because of the themes it approaches.
