Worcester Park teacher takes time off to build school for Ugandan children

A teacher is to give up part of her summer holiday to help build a school for disabled children in Uganda.

Winsome Aldred, 50, will head to Rukungiri in the East African nation this summer where she will be a volunteer.

The two week trip will see the Worcester Park teacher working on the first school of its kind outside the Ugandan capital Kampala.

Miss Aldred will be helping to extend a small school to include more classrooms, dormitories and a kitchen for the disabled children along with staff rooms for their carers.

She said: "Over the past few years, I’ve been thinking a great deal about the need to help those who have fewer opportunities than we do. I would really like to give something back and this is the time to do it."

The voluntary work is through Christian relief charity, Mission Direct which aims to help people in some of the poorest parts of the world by sending out short term volunteers from the UK.

Volunteers join the project for a minimum of two weeks and they do not need any specialist skills to get involved.
