Developers may appeal
Developers behind the controversial Surbiton sorting office scheme have warned they are not prepared to make many more concessions on their design.
Councillors delayed a decision on whether to allow a four to six-storey block of flats, shops and restaurants to be built on the Victoria Road site at a recent planning meeting.
The development control committee was unhappy with aspects of the building's design and suggested the developers come back with improved plans.
Brian Gale and Associates, the agent for developer CNM, called the decision to delay planning permission "disappointing".
Brian Gale associate Wahid Samady said the company was prepared to listen to councillors but did not know whether it would be economically viable to make further major changes.
He said significant changes had already been made, including reducing the building from nine to six storeys following consultation with residents who were concerned about its height.
Mr Samady said the new block would not be taller than the height of the tower on the existing building.
He suggested if an agreement was not reached with councillors, the company may launch an appeal.
Alan Robinson, a Cottage Grove resident, said he remained opposed to the scheme because of its height and said it was out of character with the area.
The scheme, including any updated plans is likely to be considered again on Thursday, May 13.
