Designs on disused site

Sixty-two flats and a leisure development could stand where the Surbiton sorting office once stood if Kingston council gives it the go ahead.

The disused site in St Mary's Road and parts of Victoria Road could host retail, business and food and drink units.

The design is from Sir Terrance Conran's firm of architects, Conran and Partners, which has redesigned parts of Leeds and Manchester city centres. It is hoped it could rejuvenate flagging retail at the south end of the street.

CNM Estates Ltd will present the plans to residents at St Andrew's and St Mark's CofE Junior School in Maple Road, Surbiton, at 7.30pm on Monday.

The three to nine-storey development includes 62 two and three bedroom flats, 18 residential or office units, as well as shops, businesses and restaurants or bars.

Neighbouring Cottage Grove resident Alan Robinson said: "We want the site developed but the height of it is totally unacceptable."

St Mary's Road resident Andrew Martin lives directly opposite the site.

He said: "It will do Surbiton the world of good. It will boost property prices I think.

"Anything is better than having a derelict site or even worse, a post office."

His main concern lies not with the plans, but with noisy, disruptive building work. He has heart disease and has a son with chronic lung disease.

He told the Comet how when the post office moved out he phoned police because machines weighing several tonnes were being hoisted over his house a disruption he will not accept from CNM.

He said: "I do not deal with stress and I do not deal with loud noises. The designer of this scheme will have to be on the ball to keep disruption to a minimum. I will be interested to hear what they intend to do."

CNM wants to demolish the sorting office and restore and build extensions on the post office.

Brian Gale, from CNM agents Brian Gale and Associates, said: "We have done a leaflet drop of 100 businesses and residents and the extent to which it was well received was very good.

"Comments included that the replacement of such an ugly building as a 1960s post office sorting office of concrete and steel is going to be much appreciated."

The application has been submitted to the council and is likely to go before the development control committee at a future meeting.
