Band plays on for gala
It’s been a busy few months for members of the 1st Hook scout and guide band.
After appearances at the RNLI’s fundraising day and last month’s Surbiton Festival, the band is now practising for a gala concert to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the 1st Hook scout group.
The band, which was founded 65 years ago, meets every Monday at its headquarters in Verona Drive, Surbiton, to practise its musical repertoire.
The youngest band member is nine and the oldest in their mid-30s.
And if new members have their eyes set on a particular instrument then they will be taught how to play it.
Karen Shortland, who leads the band’s woodwind section, said: “We have a complete military range. The youngsters can learn how to play anything from a piccolo to a tuba and anything in between.”
The band now has 40 members, including six new recruits who joined after attending an open evening over the summer.
Preferably, new members are involved in the scout or guide movement but if music is your passion and you want to be part of a band which regularly performs at community events and competitions then you can still get involved.
Rehearsals for the band’s gala concert will begin in earnest on Monday after members of the band return from Barcelona, having competed in an international competition.
When the band competed in the contest two years ago it came home with an £800 cheque after clinching third place.
The 1st Hook scout and guide band will lead the Remembrance Day parade in Cobham on Sunday, November 9, and the scout group’s 80th anniversary concert will take place on Saturday, November 15.
The band will also be performing at the London Guildhall along with other scout and guide groups in December.
